Therapy
The Occupational, Physical, and Speech Therapists at The Ability Center follow the guidelines of The New York State Department of education, our profession organizations, and The New York City Department of Education from which the explanations of our services have been paraphrased.
OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY - Occupational therapy includes services to address the functional needs of a child related to adaptive development, adaptive behavior and play, and sensory, motor, and postural development, in accordance with their Individual Education Plan (IEP). These services are designed to improve the child’s functional ability to perform tasks in home, school, and community settings and include: a. Identification, assessment, and intervention; b. Adaptation of the environment, and selection, design and fabrication of assistive and orthotic devices to facilitate development and promote the acquisition of functional skills; c. Prevention or minimization of the impact of initial or future impairment, delay in development, or loss
QUALIFICATIONS
- Graduate of a program in Occupational Therapy registered by NYS or by the American Occupational Therapy Association or that is deemed equivalent.
- Licensed and currently registered to practice Occupational Therapy in the State of New York.
PHYSICAL THERAPY - Physical therapy includes assessing, planning, providing, evaluating, and coordinating physical therapy services to children in accordance with their Individual Education Plan (IEP), and the physician’s plan of care to assist children in reaching the maximal physical and functional ability. These services are designed to improve the child’s functional ability to perform gross motor tasks in home, school, and community settings.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Licensed and currently registered to practice Physical Therapy in the State of New York and has graduated from physical therapy curriculum approved by the American Physical Therapy Association or that is deemed equivalent.
SPEECH LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY - Speech-language pathology includes the identification of children with communicative or oropharyngeal disorders and delays in development of communication skills, including the diagnosis and appraisal of specific disorders and delays in those skills; and the provision of services for the habilitation, rehabilitation, or prevention of communicative or oropharyngeal disorders and delays in development of communication skills. These services are provided in accordance with the child’s Individual Education Plan (IEP).
QUALIFICATIONS
- Licensed and currently registered to practice Speech Language Pathology in the State of New York. Master’s degree in Speech Language Pathology.
- Certificate of Clinical competence in Speech Language Pathology, by the American Speech Language, and Hearing Association.
